Table Mountain

Cape Town’s very own wonder of the world.

Flanked by Devil’s Peak on one end and Lion’s Head on the other, Table Mountain is the most distinctive feature of the Cape Fold Mountain Range. It’s perfectly flat and even top that makes it look like a humongous table is also home to the richest and smallest floral ecosystem on Earth, earning it a place as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The best way to enjoy Table Mountain’s spectacular beauty is undoubtedly by taking the cable car, which brings you on a 5-minute journey to the top of the mountain. Fitted with glass windows on all sides, the cable car rotates throughout the journey so that you get to take in all the views on the way up. Those feeling hale and hearty can opt to dive head-first into its amazing biodiversity and hike up the mountain instead, using either the popular Platteklip Gorge route or the more challenging India Venster route.

When you’re at the top, take your time to traipse through the hiking trails and explore Table Mountain. Up here, you’ll see thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which are endangered, like Peninsula Granite Fynbos, mongooses, peregrine falcons and more. Not sure where to start? You can download a few audio tours at the cable stations, or go on a family-friendly guided tour.
