A rustic windmill in the heart of a historic village.
Built in the 18th century, Ta’ Kola Windmill is one of the few surviving Maltese windmills from the period. A building which harnessed wind power to crush grain into flour, Ta’ Kola Windmill is now a thought-provoking museum that gives insight into the simple lifestyle of a rural miller. Its turquoise roof and spiny six pins seem like a relic from the agricultural revolution, out of place within its modernised surrounding. Inside the mill, you can explore the vast collection of traditional handcrafted tools for iron and wood work, as well as the array of uncommon traditional utensils and cooking ware in the kitchen. You can also marvel at the gigantic wooden gears that turn on a windy day, or even admire the view of the rustic village from the top floor of the mill. Ta’ Kola Windmill is definitely a throwback to a more peaceful and simple way of life that is respite from the hectic bustle of urban life.
