Swiss Museum of Transport

The name of this museum doesn’t even begin to hint at the diversity of wonders within.

With a huge variety of symposiums, exhibitions, shows and models related to the rail, road and air, this museum of transport certainly does fulfill what it’s title promises to. Rail transport is characteristic of Switzerland, proven by the impressive replica of the renowned Gotthard railway, which snakes through the stunning landscape of the alps. Challenge yourself to navigating the turns, tunnels and signs in the railway stimulator to get the train and all its passengers back to the station safely. A car theatre features an elevated visitor gallery, where you can choose your favourite car from the many shiny models on display, and have it lifted to your eye level by an ingenious electronic turntable such that you can admire it up close and personal while listening to an entertaining lesson about all its special features. Dazzling race cars in a melange of colours, styles and build are available to marvel at at your leisure, some of which were the prized rides of the legendary Swiss race car drivers Peter Monteverdi and Fredy Lienhard. The aviation sector is not to be overlooked, with a highly realistic two seater simulator that will provide every bit the thrill and rush of taking off in a jetplane, while remaining safely on the ground. However, the museum goes beyond transport in the conventional sense. It’s commonly forgotten that space flight falls into this category too, so let the museum remind you in the planetarium, with innovative technology bringing the starry night sky to you. It might seem random, but upon further contemplation you’ll realise the similarities between art and transport at the hexagonal shaped Hans Erni museum, a quirky building fitting to this eccentric artist. Not your average transport museum, there are endless fascinations to be explored.

Tips Before You Go
If you’re a chocolate lover (aren’t we all?) then head on down to the multimedia journey in the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, where you can see, hear, smell and most importantly taste everything there is about chocolate. You should probably set aside a couple of hours to explore the whole museum as there are numerous different sections to be explored, but bear in mind there are extra charges for some of the activities.
