Sweetheart Rocks (Puu’pehe )

A romantic and naturally beautiful place.

One of Hawaii’s most recognizable landmarks, this magical spot is an absolute must-see, especially if you’re travelling here with your significant other. Not called the ‘Sweetheart’ Rocks for nothing, this unique rock formation has a fascinating tale of its own star-crossed lovers to tell. Or in this case, sea-crossed. There was once a young warrior from the island of Lanai where the rocks are located, who was in love with a beautiful maiden called Pehe. He was so enamored of her beauty that whenever he saw her, his eyes would tear up. Hence they called him Makakehau: in the local tongue ‘Maka’ means eyes, and ‘Kehau’ means mist. He hid his beloved in a sea cave at the base of the cliffs, but one day when a mighty storm came, Pehe was drowned by the surge of storm waves. Overcome with grief, the warrior buried her at the top of a steep rock island and jumped the 80-foot summit to the swirling waves below, where he met his own end. When you look at the rocks today, you may spot a small rectangular wall atop the stack that is said to be the original grave of Pehe. Whether this is the truth or not, the rocks are a hauntingly melancholic attraction that will capture your attention for a long time.

Tips Before You Go
Do try to avoid walking to the rock in the middle of the day, as the temperature can get extremely hot and there is no shade around. There are also quite a few sheer drops along the hike, hence it may not be suitable for young children.
