Susten Pass

The best driving route in Switzerland.

Known as one of the “Big 3” Passes in the Swiss Alps, the Susten Pass is a brilliant architectural work of art that provides visitors with the best and most recognised scenic driving route in Switzerland. Starting from the lovely village of Wassen in Canton Uri, situated at the foot of the massive snow-capped Gotthard mountain, the route wrestles with the jagged estuary gorge of the Meienreuss River via a maze of well-constructed tunnels, leading to the Meien Valley, where the distinctive peaks of the Fünffingerstock command attention and respect. Near the rear of the valley, the route snakes steeply up in several tight curves to the summit of the impressively built Susten Pass via a short summit tunnel. Here, visitors are treated to spectacular views that stretch from the vast Meien Valley to the Sustenhorn.

As visitors continue on through the tunnel to the Bernese side of the summit, stunning panoramas of the Gadmen Valley and the Steinen Glacier emerge. Visitors are highly recommended to take a break at Hotel Steingletscher on the Pass road, to embark on an exhilarating hike on the glacier trail and enjoy amazing views of the Steinen Glacier. Soak in the rugged beauty of mother nature before heading back down towards Innertkirchen in Canton Bern, through rich green forests and stunning stone bridges. Along the way, visitors can stop by other beautiful attractions, such as Engstligennalp, or the iconic and spectacular testament of time – the Aare Gorge.

Tips Before You Go
