Sunshine Skyway Bridge

This behemoth is an awe-inspiring architectural marvel.

From afar, its tremendous steel cables look like giant sails. Up close, it only gets more magnificent. Stretching 4 miles over the blue depths of Tampa Bay, it’s as long as Mount Everest is high. There’s a certain dreamy quality about its architecture, with an arch in the center where the cable stays are located, making it look even more like an immense sailboat about to drift away at any minute. It’s actually the fifth-largest cable-stayed bridge in the world, and required 36 ‘dolphins’ put in place within the support columns to withstand the impact from boats. These precautions have made it practically invincible, as it’s able to withstand the force from a boat weighing 87,000 tonnes—practically twice the weight of the Titanic. With the bridge’s cables painted a bright sunny yellow to match the sunshine of Florida, there’s no wonder that it’s been hailed as the ‘flag’ bridge of the state. It’s even a favorite filming spot for automobile commercials, thanks to its appealing design, height and ideal length. Having captured the imagination of locals and tourists for years, it’s a must-see destination during your trip to Florida.

Tips Before You Go
Do check online if the bridge is open before you make your visit, as it does tend to close for inclement weather. It’s also a great place to catch a sunset, go fishing (there are two piers near the bridge) or just enjoy the Florida sunshine.
