Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum

A tale of Oman’s history.

History buffs, this one's definitely for you. For those of you already edging away, we implore you to reconsider, for the name belies the rich history that hides within the walls of the museum. Certainly, the focus is on the military, but it is naturally intertwined with the rich history of the Sultanate of Oman, and it is bound to leave a lasting impression. From afar, the Bait Al Falaj (previously a fort and the headquarters of Sultan Said bin Sultan's Armed Forces), commands attention with its pristine white walls, a stark contrast to the maze of greenery that leads up to it.

Inaugurated by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos in 1988, the museum is host to an extensive collection displaying Oman's military history, including guns and cannons. If you head to the ground floor, you can learn more about Oman before and after the spread of Islam, and the iconic historical events that shaped the country. Admire the service uniforms on display and the military music instrumentals before your attention is stolen by the jet aircraft ejector seat and parachute on display. That is not all; sections of the upper rooms are dedicated to Oman's international relations and the variety of documents and records on display will definitely hook your attention. One trip and we promise you will leave understanding more of Oman's history than you could imagine.
