Store Blåmann

Kvaløya’s tallest mountain offers a challenging climb with a stunning reward.

The sharp, jagged point of Store Blåmann, roughly translated as “Big Blue Man”, dominates the skyline of Kvaløya. Hikers who take on this challenging climb are rewarded with stunning views over the island and its surrounding sea.

The 3-kilometre trail starts off rather gently but soon evolves into a steep climb requiring some scrambling up the rocks. In addition, there are many trails leading up the mountain, so be sure to stick to the main trail and pay careful attention to the signs! On your way up, you will be surrounded by lush fields and trees, and may even be able to spot some berries along the way.

At the top, a curious cylindrical stack of rocks greets you. Have a seat and enjoy some lunch while admiring the landscape laid out below you. Be awestruck by views of Kvaløya’s other mountains, and trace the path of a river that opens to the Norwegian sea. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Tromsø on the mainland.

Tips Before You Go
Climbing to the top of the mountain is no walk in the park so make sure you’re prepared with covered shoes and enough food and water before you begin your ascent for a much-appreciated comfortable hike up. To ensure that your personal safety is not compromised, do avoid hiking Store Blåmann in late fall or spring when there are frost and ice covering parts of the rock, bringing about the possibility of slipping off these rocks. Most importantly, keep your eyes peeled for the remnants of red arrows painted onto some rocks that will warn you of the more physically demanding and dangerous sections of your hike to avoid.
