As you enter the Red Square through the Resurrection Gate, you will see the magnificent maroon State Historical Museum. Constructed by the architect Vladimir Sherwood, its unique style of Russian Revivalism with jagged towers and cornices will not fail to strike you. Step inside to discover more than 4 million fascinating items of artefacts, where the rich history of Russia is consolidated under one roof. The mind-boggling collection, which was the fruit of a 20-year long project, stretches as far back to the Palaeolithic period.


With so many must-sees, do not miss the awe-inspiring longboat excavated from the banks of the Volga River. Other interesting highlights include funerary masks from the Altai, the Turmanskiy Sarcophagus that comprises a unique blend of Hellenic architecture and Chinese decoration, as well as the intriguing silver death mask of Peter the Great by Carlo Rastrelli.
