St. Salvator’s Cathedral

The oldest parish church in Bruges and a cathedral brimming with the jewels of history.

St. Salvator’s Cathedral is a unique building featuring a motley of different styles and artistic movements, the result of numerous renovations, repairs and additions. Its oldest sections can be traced back to the 10th century, fragments of its origins as a humble parish church.

Today, it is a magnificent cathedral bearing the marks of history, such as elaborate Late Gothic choir stalls from 1430, murals and Flemish paintings from the 14th to 17th century, and intricate tapestries from the 18th century. The very image of richness and opulence, the cathedral walls are filled with paintings from door to altar, and are fitted with majestic stained-glass windows that, like the paintings, extend across the entire body of the church.

A far cry from its simple roots, St. Salvator’s Cathedral is a grandiose wonder that will leave you awestruck.
