St. Nicholas Church

A priceless gem of Baroque architecture.

St. Nicholas Church is the most famous Baroque church in Prague, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and one of the most valuable Baroque buildings north of the Alps. Its construction was passed down through three generations of talented architects from father to son, then to son-in-law like a prized family heirloom, the magnificent church taking almost a century to complete.

The main building comprises a chapel and magnificent nave, flanked by two elegant towers, everything capped with charming green roofs. Its dome is an impressive 20 metres in diameter, arcing gracefully over the transept. The church interior is more Rococo than Baroque, featuring resplendent decorations full of palatial grandeur. White walls fringed with delicate gold trimmings, magnificent frescoes, and intricate wrought-iron banisters adorn its walls, but the centre of attention is undoubtedly the glittering chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
