The iconic asymmetrical church in Kraków.
With its two towers of different heights, the St. Mary’s Basilica stands next to the Main Market Square in Kraków. First built in 1220, it was destroyed during a Tartar raid, and rebuilt in 1320. In the early 15th century, the northern tower was raised to 80 metres high, serving as a watchtower for the city. The interior of this basilica is truly a sight to behold, with its stunning stained glass windows, and ceiling covered in stars.
Don’t miss out on the hourly Hejnał mariacki – the city’s famous trumpet call – played from the top of the higher tower. A historical tradition, this famous call stops abruptly mid-melody to commemorate a 13th century trumpeter, who was shot in the throat while alerting the city of an oncoming Mongol invasion. Visitors can also tour the interior of the church, along with a climb to the top of the tower for a breath-taking view of the city.
