St. Marks Lighthouse

A historical landmark on the banks of St. Mark’s River.

Standing tall and proud on the banks of the St. Mark’s River stands the St. Mark’s Lighthouse, a national historic landmark that has weathered raging storms and guided vessels into safe harbours for almost two centuries. The lighthouse is accompanied by a small keeper’s dwelling. Both buildings stand in the midst of gardens and are surrounded by a white picket fence, creating a charming and idyllic scene.

This hardy lighthouse has withstood the test of time. After countless hurricanes, many of which destroyed parts of the sea walls and keeper’s dwelling, and the tumultuous civil war, it miraculously is still fully functional and open to visitors. The lantern room was restored to its former glory in 2016, where the Fresnel Lens, first installed in 1867, is on display.
