An iconic church in Zagreb that has become part of the city’s very identity.
St Mark's church is one of those buildings that are so intertwined with the city's identity that any visit to Zagreb would be incomplete without seeing this church! Its iconic colourful tiled roof boasts the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right. Its Gothic portals were constructed in the 14th century and the beautiful interior houses stunning sculptures by Ivan Meštrović. The parish church also holds the oldest emblem of Zagreb - crafted into the northwestern wall of the church, and Romanesque windows, suggesting that its origins date back to the 13th century.
The church has a rich history, having borne witness to fairs that took place under the rule of a Croatian-Hungarian king, as well as the punishment of people tied to a pillar in front of the church. It has weathered various incidents over the decades, including earthquakes and fires that caused critical damages to its structure. Now, you can enter the anteroom during Mass time and marvel at the interior of the church. Culture and history come together to make St Mark's Church an everlasting monument of Zagreb.
