Red Sea Governorate, Egypt
St. John’s Reef

A diver’s paradise, offering a fantastic wildlife experience.

St. John’s Reef is a cluster of smaller reefs offering stunning underwater wildlife vistas within the Red Sea in Egypt. Depending on your interests, you might want to visit different reefs to get the most out of your visit here. Those looking to explore an underwater kingdom would do well to traverse through the Habili Ali reef, which offers the sight of giant gorgonians and black corals. Along with the schools of fish that call this their home, this particular reef is more akin to an underwater city than anything else. If you’d rather get your heart pumping, then why not jump into the Grey Reef, which is where silver tip sharks and hammerhead sharks call home. The sight of these apex predators in their hunting grounds is sure to give you an adrenaline rush (and quite possibly a heart attack if you’re not mentally prepared to swim with sharks). There are many other reefs here of course, all with their own quirks and icons, and it really depends on what you’re most interested in. Just don’t forget to pay a visit to St. John’s cave though. While it might not involve underwater exploration, the cave actually features a whole labyrinth of other caves inside. If you’ve had enough of swimming and looking at fish, then perhaps exploring terra firma might make a more exciting prospect.

Tips Before You Go
If you plan on embarking on multiple dives and snorkel sessions around the majestic reefs here, then perhaps it would be better to sign up for a liveaboard tour. This entails staying on a boat for a few days, which would also allow you to just dive into the water as and when you feel like it. Just make sure you remember to put on proper equipment though. While the waters may be calm, you shouldn’t underestimate Mother Nature.
