St. Jakob Park

An architectural marvel and the roaring home of FC Basel.

As misleading as the name might be, St. Jakob Park is not a public park: it is actually a Swiss sports stadium, and also the largest football venue in Switzerland. The stadium is known affectionately among locals as ‘Joggeli,’ the diminutive form of the word ‘Jakob’ and the colloquial equivalent of the word ‘Jake’. The image it conjures is instantly evident: an average man with a cold can of beer in his hand, relaxing in his seat to watch the evening soccer game and surrounded by his friends. But this relaxed imagery is an illusion: the atmosphere is overwhelming on game day for home team FC Basel. If you’re not a sports buff, come on an off day to admire the stadium in a more placid environment. Created by the architects who later designed Beijing’s National Stadium, its angled roof and sleek lines are an attraction in themselves. But if you truly want to experience a roaring crowd and an electric atmosphere, then game day should definitely be in your itinerary.
