Speculum Alchemiae

An alchemist’s studio.

At the heart of the historical centre of Prague lies the enigmatic Speculum Alchemiae, a fascinating underground alchemist’s studio that was rediscovered during a massive flood in 2002. Situated in one of the oldest houses in Prague, visitors journey through a secret door to rediscover Prague’s occult history, when science and mysticism were often interlinked and magic was revered and feared at the same time.

Explore the crucible that could purportedly turn lead into gold as well as the omnipotent Philosopher’s Stone, and be dazzled by the mummified crocodile hanging from the ceiling – the alchemists’ very own version of an awe-inspiring and terrifying “dragon”. See the secret tunnels that connect to King Rudolf II’s castle, and that provided alchemists with the perfect escape plan from the city. Taste the magical elixir of eternal youth and be rejuvenated and revitalised; interestingly, elixirs are still prepared using the original recipes found in the studio today, and make for an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experience at the Speculum Alchemiae.
