South Coast Botanic Garden

A 35-hectare garden in Palos Verdes Hills.

With over 150,000 landscaped plants from over 140 families, 700 genera, and 2,000 different species, the South Coast Botanic Garden boasts a wide variety of trees, shrubs and flowering plants blooming throughout the year. They host many native Californian plants which provide shelter and nourishment for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other native wildlife. They also house vast collections of foreign and exotic plants, especially plants from Australia that do well in the California climate, and South Africa.

With the Children’s Garden and Children’s Discovery Garden, the Garden offers educational encounters to kids, with the plants in the garden planned around nursery rhymes. There’s also a garden that specialises sights and smells, with raised flower beds so visitors can touch the plants more easily. There’s also the Greenhouses, open between 9am and 3pm, housing tropical plants in climate-controlled environments, and new developments every time you go back. The newest one is their rose garden.

In the stream that runs through the Garden, you can spot fish as well as ducks, and it makes for a great place to rest your legs and just sit among nature. The koi pond is also a great place to just watch the pretty fish swim by as you relax. Both for botanical enthusiasts and anyone else who likes being among nature, the South Coast Botanic Garden provides a calm and enjoyable time for all.
