South Beach

A neighbourhood in Miami with scenic beaches, happening nightlife and celebrity chefs.

South Beach (or SoBe) is a colourful place, both in terms of the crowds that visit it as well as the architecture. South Beach was made popular by the LGBT community in the 1980s and 1990s. Restoring old and dilapidated art deco clubs and hotels, the area became a hotspot and safe haven for the gay community, which brought tourism to Florida. Since 2009, Miami Beach has been holding Gay Pride Parades as well! After Hurricane Andrew, architect William Lane even donated some of his works, helping build amazing lifeguard towers that rejuvenated the beach.

One of the best things to do when in South Beach is to sit back and relax at one of the famous restaurants and cafes, many of which have open air areas to look at the great sea views. Joe's Stone Crab, open since 1913, is one of the most well-known restaurants and is two years older than the city of Miami Beach itself! Known for its fresh seafood, people fly from all over the world to get a taste of their signature crab in mustard sauce. Celebrity chefs like Top Chef winner Jeremy Ford and Spanish chef José Andrés have also left their mark on South Beach with their top-tier restaurants.

After you eat, what better way that to visit one of the many parks and walk it off? The 17-acre South Pointe Park was donated to the city by the federal government in 1979, and in 1984, the park was constructed with an amphitheatre, picnic area and more. With beautiful views of the Biscayne Bay, Fisher Island, and the Atlantic Ocean, the Park is a great place to enjoy the day with your family or attend one of the many festivals that get held there.

And of course, SoBe wouldn’t be SoBe without the nightlife! A diverse scene with nightclubs, cocktail bars and dive bars, there’s something out there for everyone. Whether you like your bars with live jazz music or on a rooftop to view the glittering Downtown, South Beach has only the best to offer.
