Solstice Canyon

The all-season, all-level hiking trails here gurantee an extraordinary experience for everyone!

Featuring easy, medium and hard hiking trails for people of all experience levels, the Solstice Canyon is a beautiful National Parks site between the mountains of California with a large range of wildlife, from the red-tailed hawk to the alligator lizards. The hikes feature several man-made monuments as well, including the oldest stone building in California and the ruins of a burnt-down mansion. Along with the lovely perennial waterfall, these sites can all be accessed on the Solstice Canyon Trail, the easiest of the hikes. A 2.6-mile round trip,it is a leisurely hike under a canopy of trees that makes the route mostly shaded. A family-friendly hike that can be easily walked by kids, the paved road is so wide and flat that it can be traversed even without hiking or sports shoes, though they are recommended!

The Rising Sun Trail, on the other one, is famous among experienced hikers. With long stretches of climbing (nothing too steep, though!) and almost no shade under the blistering California sun, the trail offers spectacular views in exchange for the serious workout. During the dry reason, the stream that runs through the canyon can be spotted easily, lined by green foliage, while the rest of the area is a rugged brown-green. During the wet season, the canyon is lush green and beautiful, with flowers blooming! You will even run across the ruins of the Tropical Terrace house, built by the famous African-American architect Paul Revere Williams, the famous burnt-down mansion of the Solstice Canyon, followed by the refreshing waterfall. From here, you can return back to the rugged path or take the more rugged Deer Valley Loop Trail.

Tips Before You Go
The Solstice Canyon Trail is located just off the Pacific Coast Highway, and can even be accessed by the METRO buses. However, parking space at the carparks can be limited, which is why public transport is recommended. It is recommended that you visit the Canyon during the wet season as the dry season can lead to forest fires, which results in the Park’s closure.
