Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

A fitting backdrop to one of the most extensive modern art collections in New York.

It would be hard to miss the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum WWII from its perch along 5th Avenue and across Central Park. This final legacy created by eminent architect Frank Lloyd Wright breaks boundaries and redefines art just as much as the pieces housed within it. The museum toys with the concept of geometry in the stacked disks which present themselves as the exterior of the building and the running theme of circles in the interior as well. Upon stepping in, you would walk into an open atrium flooded by daylight entering through the glass dome above with its web of concrete ribs. The ramp which leads you through the exhibit is a continuous spiral, cantilevered against the side walls as it rises up close to 90 feet into the air. Showcased along the plain, curving white walls are works by Louise Bourgeois as she explores sexuality and abuse behind doors as well as Josef Albert’s foray into abstract art, seen by many as the founding father of abstraction. Even the most ordinary objects such as a 50s radio stands for much more, a muzzled mouthpiece for the masses, through Danh Vo as he looks at authoritarianism through the lens of the common folk. These artists and more are featured within the museum on a seasonal basis, leaving visitors to discover something new each time they return to the pristine white walls of the Museum. With so much attention lavished upon this prime structure, don’t forget to venture down the street to the demure limestone tower by the Museum’s side. This recent addition holds many more collections to be viewed but leaves the spotlights on the installations instead. Regardless, these two bastions of modern art leave much to be pondered and marveled at.
