Soares dos Reis National Museum

Exhibiting Portuguese art since 1833.

Currently located in the neoclassical Carrancas Palace in the city of Porto, the Soares dos Reis National Museum was the first Portuguese national museum to exhibit Portuguese art. With both permanent collections and the occasional temporary exhibit, you are guaranteed a unique experience with each visit. Its name is derived from António Soares dos Reis (1847 – 1889), a prominent sculptor. Founded by King Peter IV (1798 – 1834), it was originally located in the centre of Porto, housing religious art confiscated from Portuguese convents. However, in 1942, it was moved to its current location, which provided larger spaces and better conditions to store and exhibit the collections. Today, the museum displays works dating all the way from the 19th century, and includes the work by Soares do Reis, Domingos Sequeira (1768 – 1837), Henrique Pousão (1859 – 1884) and many others.
