Isle of Skye, Scotland
Skye Museum of Island Life

It’s time to travel to 19th century Scotland.

Thatched roofs, barns and crofted lands - it’s a sight that is sure to make any romantic fall in love and for the writers to pen the tale of a township. While the Isle of Skye is home to a great many wonders, some fall under the radar. The Skye Museum of Island Life in Kilmuir will transport you back in time to over a century ago when the Skye people still lived in these quaint cottages and farmed for a living. The central cottage is where you can browse books to learn more about the people and their history. Discover the tale of Flora MacDonald, who smuggled Bonnie Prince Charlie disguised as a spinning maid to safety. Make your way to Ceilidh House, where you can gaze at various documents and postcards that had belonged to the people.

Imagine you are one of the people in the township as you enter the Old Crotfthouse and gather by the peat fire with the rest of your family or head to the kitchen to prepare a delicious meal. The kids would go to sleep in their box-beds while the parents would have another in their bedroom. Need one of your tools fixed? Head to the Old Smithy, where a rather lifelike rendition of the smithy awaits, anvil in hand as he shapes horseshoes. In the Weaver’s house, the weaver works at one of the many spinning wheels. There’s so much to learn and discover so what are you waiting for?
