Skogafoss

Hidden in the glorious Skogáfoss waterfall is a legend that will take you back in time.

The well-known Skogáfoss waterfall is only a stone’s throw away from Skógar, a humble village located in southern Iceland. “Skogáfoss”, which translates to “Forest Falls”, continues to draw people from all over the world all year round due to its changing facades according to the season. During winter, the entire landscape which is usually lush green turns white, and it looks as if time has stopped – if not for the cascading water. At other times, you will get to see beautiful rainbows across the air due to large amounts of spray that come out of the 60-metre waterfall. It is truly a paradise for photographers because no matter which time of the year you visit, the view is always great. To take a closer look at the waterfall, you can even walk up a flight of around 500 stairs, although in winter this could be a rather slippery and dangerous affair. There are parking lots, hotels, cafes and toilets nearby for your convenience too, so there really isn’t much to detract you from visiting this gorgeous waterfall.

Tips Before You Go
This waterfall is one of the more famous ones in Iceland, so you will be coming across many people. Brave the crowds and you will be duly rewarded with spectacular views and photo opportunities though. Another noteworthy thing is to wear appropriate footwear as there’s a lot of walking to be done especially if you’re taking the staircase. By appropriate, we mean shoes with plenty of grip. The staircase can be rather slippery so you would want to minimise that. Unfortunately, those with difficulties walking may not be able to get a closer look, as it involves climbing flights of stairs.
