Skansen Kronan

A historical place of retreat for soldiers in the past, and now a retreat for visitors looking to escape to some peace and serenity.

Named after the iconic crown feature sitting atop its roof, Skansen Kronan is an old fortress located on the Risåsberget hilltop in the Haga district. Architect Erik Dahlberg built Kronan to withstand a mighty siege, with four stories enclosed by 16 feet thick walls to keep out the enemy. Its construction was completed in 1697, but since then it has deviated from its initial intended purpose, becoming a prison, a residency, and most recently a military museum. Untouched since the late 19th century and having never seen battle, the building is well-preserved for us to admire its noble design. Nowadays the building is closed to the public except for hosting special parties, weddings or gatherings. However, there is still much to delight in, with spectacular views of the city all around, best enjoyed while chowing down on a picnic on the lawns. In the summer, a cafe serves homemade ice cream and pastries, and on New Years, this spot is a magnet for people eager to get a good view of the Gothenburg fireworks display. The trek up a long flight of stairs will invigorate you as you make your way towards the unforgettable visual reward at the top.
