Skaftafell National Park

Skaftafell is among Iceland’s most precious troves rich with a plethora of natural wonders.

The south east of Iceland is never short of wonders. From jaw-dropping geological wonders to lush green forests and dazzling ice caves, it is a truly diverse region. The Skaftafell National Park is located here, or more precisely, in the Vatnajökull National Park which itself is enormous in size. If you’re hiking here, you will be lucky enough to get to pass through forests, waterfalls, mountains and glaciers, including the country’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur (6950 ft) in the background. An interesting fact about this place is that there’s hardly snow here even though it is surrounded by glaciers. This national park is also well-known for glacier hiking and ice cave tours- we suggest that you sign up for either one or even better, both. Just make sure you’re dressed the part though. You wouldn’t want to be underdressed in the cold now would you?

Tips Before You Go
Glacier and ice cave tours only operate during the winter because in the summer, these natural structures melt, becoming structurally unsound and unpredictable. Try your best to visit during the winter then. Upon signing up for these activities, you will be given a safety briefing – we advise you to pay attention to them as glaciers and ice caves can be highly dangerous.
