Sir Lowry’s Pass

The suggestion of “let’s go for a drive” will never sound more enticing than when it refers to driving along this incredible pass.

Where the hooves of oxen once trod, car tyres now zip along this busy Hottentots-Holland mountain range pass. As the main national road between Cape Town and the Garden Route, it has become a 4 lane carriageway that is always packed trunk to bonnet with cars whose windows are filled with the eager faces of people craning their necks to get a good view of the beautiful surroundings. The summit stands at 920 metres, where a view point offers unbeatable views of Somerset Valley, Gordon’s Bay and the strand, all the way to Cape Town, not to mention the Cape staples of False Bay and Table Mountain as well as the Cape Flats. From here, you can even catch paragliders launching off the cliffs and soaring off over the valley, and it’s not uncommon at all to get a sighting of baboons who love to hang out here. A long drive will never feel shorter than when you have this stunning scenery to distract you!
