Shōren-in Monzeki Temple (青蓮院門跡)

Feel the ancient vibes of the Shōren-in Monzeki Temple.

At the foot of Kyoto‘s picturesque Higashiyama Mountains, lies the atmospheric Shōren-in Monzeki Temple. Belonging to the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, the chief priests were originally from the imperial family. Step inside the temple and follow the winding path that will take you to the entrance where the enchanting Kachoden drawing room awaits you. Admire the exquisite paintings on the sliding doors (fusuma) and look out for the well-kept garden with a tranquil pond, which lies just outside Kachoden.

Feel the charm of ancient Kyoto as you stroll along the wooden walkway leading you to the Shijokodo Hall, which houses two stunning paintings. Do not miss the mystical mandala, which is the source of worship, and be sure to appreciate the statue carved out of jade in front of its protective cover. Be awe-inspired by the Fudo Myoo, the formidable deity of wisdom holding a sword as ferocious flames encircle him. In addition, one should also take some time to stroll through the verdant Shorenin gardens, where there is a small shrine and lovely bamboo grove as well.
