Shikotsu-Tōya National Park (支笏洞爺国立公園)

Just a short getaway from the city of Sapporo, Shikotsu-Tōya National Park offers a beautiful encounter with the wonders of nature.

Boasting some of the prefecture’s most beautiful scenery, the Shikotsu-Tōya National Park lies in southwest Hokkaido, and is one of the most convenient nature getaways for visitors in Sapporo. Offering 1,000 square kilometres of lakes, volcanoes, hiking trails and more, this park is named after its two lakes: Shikotsu and Tōya, which make up the park’s main features. Shikotsu is Japan’s second deepest lake with a depth of 265 metres, and is a perfect campsite for those looking to pitch their tents. It is also the site of the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival, which takes place annually in January and February. Tōya, on the other hand, is a more developed area with many onsens and hiking trails available. The park, which is divided into five parts, has no shortage of natural attractions and exciting activities for visitors to enjoy.
