Shichahai (什刹海)

A historic, scenic area consisting of three lakes.

The Shichahai is a historic and scenic area consisting of three lakes. Located near the Forbidden City and Beihai Lake, it is a picturesque site conveniently in the vicinity of other iconic landmarks in Beijing. The three lakes all have their own names — Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai. These translate into Front Lake, Rear Lake and West Lake respectively, and they are all lined with tall trees, which is highly reminiscent of many Chinese paintings that feature nature.

Literally translated as "the lake of ten temples", ten famous Taoist and Buddhist temples, as well as several royal mansions and gardens, can be found around Shichahai. Look out for the more well-known ones, namely the Prince Gong Mansion and the Prince Chun Mansion. The area is perfect for a romantic stroll, followed by dinner at one of the many restaurants in the vicinity.

Tips Before You Go
If you thought that all you could do here was take a stroll, well, you thought wrong. You can actually rent a boat and enjoy yourself rowing around the lake if you so desire. Just remember, there won\'t be such a thing in winter as the lakes will be frozen by then.
