Shark Valley

A 15-mile tram trail in the Everglades.

The Everglades is home to many of Florida’s beautiful and rare creatures, including several species of birds like herons and ibises, amphibians, and everyone’s favourite, the alligator! Often known as a swamp, it’s actually closer to a river, though it’s often only a few inches deep and can be over 50 miles wide! The tram tour takes you through the Shark Valley section of the Everglades, with a stop at the 45-foot high observation deck at the halfway point. Here, you can see over 20 miles of the river of grass, and its over 150 species of trees and plants.

While taking trams is the best idea due to the professionals who’ll guide you along, it’s also possible to walk or bike the 15 miles. Bike rental is available at the office of the Tram Tours, and they even have smaller bikes for kids. Though you won’t have the safety of the trams, most animals (even the alligators!) are docile if left alone and a 10-15 feet distance from them is sufficient. Don’t attempt to feed them, lest they think your arm is lunch as well!

Tips Before You Go
By Florida law, everyone under 16 is required to wear helmets, which are also available. Be sure to bring your ID to rent a bike, and bring water and refreshments along as there are no amenities or stores in the middle of Shark Valley. The best time to visit is during December and April, though you should book your tram tours beforehand as the Everglades sees a huge influx of visitors during this time.
