Described by the architect Tim Johnson as “nothing short of genius”, visit the Shanghai World Financial Center to discover why.
Conveniently located in the Pudong district, the Shanghai World Financial Center is absolutely nothing to scoff at, standing at an imposing 492 metres tall. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, the 101-storey tower is a shining display of glass and metal, with a trapezoid aperture made up of structural steel and reinforced concrete. This makes it somewhat resemble a bottle opener, hence it is affectionately referred to as such by both locals and tourists alike. The tower itself houses a plethora of things, being home to numerous offices and conference rooms, as well as hotels and even ground-floor shopping malls. There is even a gift shop over here, where you can actually purchase a miniature metal replica of the building. But it’s more than just a replica though, as it actually functions as a bottle opener, and makes for a great souvenir that will definitely end up becoming a talking point when you have guests over. Just don’t forget to drop by the observation decks here though. They will give you absolutely gorgeous panoramic views of Shanghai, although if you come at night, that’s when you’ll get to see the city all lit up, looking as if there were stars right in front of you.
