Originally named as the Sino-Soviet Friendship Building, look out for vestiges of its interesting past.
To commemorate the alliance between China and the Soviet Union, the Shanghai Exhibition Centre was built in 1955 and is a major landmark of the city. Occupying a massive 93,000 square meters, it is one of the largest integrated building complexes in central Shanghai. Standing at about 110m in height, from its foot to its spire topped by a prominent red star modeled after the Kremlin stars, the design of the building was heavily influenced by Russian neoclassical architecture. See the central tower that was modeled on Saint Petersburg's Admiralty Building, and look out for the original relief sculpture work which is still visible in various parts of the complex. Try to spot the bronze statue of a worker holding up a tangle of flowing ribbons as well as Arman's sculpture Cavalleria Eroica on the façade of the building.
