Built in 1619 by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife, the Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal garden located on the shores of Dal Lake in the Kashmir Valley. Shalimar, which means ‘abode of love’ in Sanskrit, was built in order to please the Emperor’s beloved wife. Today, the garden has been converted into a public park, and is considered a significant landmark in Mughal horticulture. Covering 12.4 hectares of plot, it is also the largest Mughal garden in the region. Visitors will enjoy the elaborate architectural details of the three terraces within the garden, as well as an impressive number of 410 fountains which add to the landscape’s magnificence.
