Sex Museum Amsterdam (Venustempel)

Otherwise known as the Venus Temple, the museum proudly lays claim to the title of being the ‘world’s first sex museum’.

Located in the busiest part of Amsterdam and within walking distance of Central Station, the Sex Museum is a Dutch celebration of one of humanity’s most natural yet most controversial processes. With some of its exhibits being large ornamental statues of the human genitalia or provocative images of people explicitly depicted in coitus, the museum definitely lives up to its risqué reputation. This is probably not somewhere you want to bring your kids, and the museum does have a minimum age requirement of sixteen.

Nonetheless, the museum is not just a bawdy peep show intended to shock and excite the senses. It genuinely attempts to explore the sensual history of lovemaking via a rich and fascinating collection of old objects that detail the human sexuality. These include photographs, old china, art, and rare photographs, which hold value for their sheer cultural heritage. Ultimately everyone has different perspectives of this unique museum, some find it intriguing while others border on tasteless—why not keep an open mind and pay this place a visit to decide for yourself?
