Seodaemun Prison History Museum (서대문형무소역사관)

Pay respects at this solemn prison and museum.

In Seodaemun Independence Park rests the Seodaemun Prison History Museum. Its quiet grounds invite all to learn more about the pain and sacrifices endured by the Koreans during the Japanese Occupation. As many hardships were faced in the brick-red prison complex, the area is now used to honour those who gave up their lives for Korea’s independence, and it is truly a site that you will never forget.

Step into the vast museum within the compounds, which continue to preserve the history of the prison through exhibitions such as the “Temporary Detention Room and Torture Room” and “A Place of Reverence”, taking you through the foundation and construction of the prison. Other sites around the tranquil grounds include towering Dongnimmun Memorial Gate, constructed to honour those who fought for their independence, and the chilling Execution Building, a place to pay tribute to all the lives lost there.
