Sé de Évora (Cathedral of Évora)

One of the oldest monuments located at the highest point of Evora, Portugal.

The Cathedral of Evora is a historic church associated with the Roman Catholic denomination and it is situated at the highest spot in the city of Evora in Portugal. It remains one of the oldest and most significant monuments in the city and earned its official UNESCO World Heritage status in 1988. The cathedral’s most important historical figure was Cardinal-King Henrique (1512-1580), who was Evora’s cardinal and archbishop back then. Cardinal Henrique, who was the brother of King John III, had to succeed D. Sabastiao as Portugal’s king after his death during the Battle of Alcacer-Quibir. The Cardinal-King then ruled between 1578 and 1580. The cathedral played a significant role in Portugal’s musical history in the 16th and 17th centuries as well, with several composers, including Mateus de Aranda and Duarte Lobo having close ties to the cathedral.

Tips Before You Go
If you climb all the way up to the roof, you will be standing at the highest point in Evora, which will give you breath-taking views. However, the only way up is by climbing a spiral staircase. This might not be the most accessible tourist destination then. Regardless, it is still worth a visit due to its rich history and beautiful architecture.
