Scuola Grande di San Marco

Admire the harmonious façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco.

Facing the Campo San Giovanni e Paolo, one of the largest squares in Venice, the Scuola Grande di San Marco was built by the Confraternity of San Marco in 1260. The Austrians converted it into a military hospital, but it is now an Ospedale Civile or civilian hospital. Recently restored, see the fascinating façade with intricately embellished niches and marble statues by Mauro Codussi. Gaze at the magnificent altar by Sansovino and the ten Corinthian columns decorated with beautiful tiles. Do not miss the gorgeous works by Jacopo Tintoretto who furnished the Scuola with the painting of the Miracle of the Slave (also known as The Miracle of St. Mark, 1548).
