Edinburgh, Scotland
Scottish National War Memorial (Scottish War Museum)

Experience a poignant and moving visit at the Scottish National War Memorial, which commemorates the brave Scottish servicemen of both world wars and later conflicts.

Located within the historical Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish National War Memorial was built to honour Scottish soldiers who died during the two world wars and in the more recent conflicts. Housed in the former north barrack block in Crown Square, numerous memorials are incorporated here. Proposals for a memorial were put up in 1917, with the original intent to commemorate the fallen Scots of World War I. This explains the casket containing the original Rolls of Honours, which lists the 147,000 names of those who died during The Great War. Within the memorial, there are also sculptures and stained glass that depict the scenes from the First World War. After the Second World War, 50,000 more names were added into the Rolls of Honour, but the memorials remain unchanged. At the Scottish National War Memorial, visitors will learn about the triumphs and defeats of Scotland’s war history and have the honour of remembering the brave Scottish servicemen and their great sacrifice.
