Inside one of Scotland’s most iconic buildings on Queen Street, Edinburgh, is the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The museum sits inside an iconic red sandstone neo-gothic palace, built during the 19th century. Step into the art museum and meet the people who have shaped the nation’s identity. The gallery houses a collection of portraits featuring significant persons who have shaped Scotland’s past, present and future. The museum’s collection is extremely vast, boasting an incredible 3,000 paintings and sculptures, 25,000 prints and drawings, and some 38,000 photographs. You will find a wide diversity of people in this museum, ranging from Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 – 1587) to Britain’s Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle (born 1961), and even football coach Sir Alex Ferguson (born 1941)! Amongst the must-see here is the Great Hall, where a painted frieze of famous people dominates the ambulatory.
