Scaliger Tombs

Funerary monuments in Verona, Italy commemorating the Scaliger family.

The Scaliger Tombs is a series of five Gothic funerary monuments located in Verona, Italy. They were erected to commemorate the Scaligers, who ruled over Verona between the 13th and 14th centuries. They are situated outside the Santa Maria Antica church and are built in Gothic fashion. This means that they are mostly freestanding open tabernacle-like monuments that rise above the ground with a sarcophagus over them. French historian Georges Duby once commented that they remain the most outstanding examples of Gothic art. Several notable members whose tombs still remain include Canagrande I, whose tomb was the first to be built, Mastino II, Cansignorio, Alberto II and Giovanni. It’s up to you to decide if you want to take pictures with these tombs though. Perhaps you’ll see a ghost in one of your photos.
