Scaliger Castle in Malcesine

A beautiful castle and one of the top tourist attractions in Malcesine, Italy.

When planning a visit to Malcesine in Italy, you definitely have to include the Scaliger Castle in your itinerary. It is a beautiful and historically significant building on the island, and it will definitely catch one’s attention from afar as it towers over everything else at 31 metres high. It is located along the stunning coastline amongst the Monte Baldo mountains. To get to the castle, you should take a leisurely stroll through the scenic cobbled streets. You will find yourself in a large courtyard with Casermetta to your left - which used to be the guardhouse but now houses the Monte Baldo Museum. The right of the courtyard has a staircase that will lead you up to the Polveriera room built by a group of Austrians and today exhibits several art pieces by Sala Goehte. Of course, the greatest attraction still has to be the tower itself, which offers spectacular aerial views over Malcesine.

Tips Before You Go
Visitors can get to the top of the highest tower in the castle, but do take note that this is only accessible by climbing up steep flights of stairs. Those with difficulties walking may not want to embark upstairs, especially if the castle is crowded. Do try the local delicacies when walking towards the castle as well. The gelato and pizza are especially good.
