São Bento Railway Station

A 19th century railway station in Porto, Portugal.

The Sao Bento Railway Station is a 19th century railway station situated in Porto municipality, Cedofeita, Portugal. The station began construction in 1900, and a cornerstone was erected by King D. Carlos I. The following years saw the commissioning of the railway, expansion of the station and the inauguration of the station in 1915. Steps to refurbish the station further took place in 1992, and in October 2016, Porto Vivo-Sociedade de Reabilitacao Urbana instructed that works on a hostel adjacent to the station be halted until a license was obtained. The station features a beautiful three-storey interior and an exterior made of granite. The ceilings see large azulejo paintings depicting Portuguese history. The station is the main terminus of Porto’s suburban railway lines and western terminus for the Douro line between Porto and Pochino.

For starters, visiting this station is absolutely free, so do drop by if you have some time to spare. It is an active one however, so you can expect crowds during the weekends and peak periods such as in the morning and evening. If you wish to avoid those crowds, then visit sometime in the afternoon on a weekday.
