Santuario Madonna del Soccorso

This 16th century devotional complex adds a divine touch to the scenic landscape of Lake Como.

On the western bank of the Lake Como is a classic Baroque-style devotional complex that has stood strong through the test of time. The Santuario Madonna del Soccorso, together with the Sacro Monte chapels, are so old that they have been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is believed that the white marble statue of Virgin Mary that’s kept in a chapel attached to the Santuario till this day was once found by a disabled child during times of war. That child would miraculously recover later on. According to the story, that’s how the devotion to Mary began over here. Whether divine intervention was the cause of that miraculous recovery remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t hurt you to try asking Mother Mary to intercede on your behalf. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the religious type or not. On another note, since the Santuario is quite secluded, you will have to walk a fair bit just to get there. Hopefully you don’t mind the exercise.

Tips Before You Go
A visit to Santuario Madonna del Soccorso would be incomplete without a stroll by the beautiful Lake Como, which you will get to experience as you walk past the 14 smaller chapels that make up this entire complex. The walk is rather arduous however, with the climb being steep at certain points. If you don’t feel like walking too much, then perhaps this place isn’t suitable for you. Remember to bring plenty of water as well, as it can get extremely sunny out here.
