Santa Monica Public Library

The public library serving Santa Monica and the rest of California.

Since its establishment in 1890 with only 800 books and with only one City Librarian, the Santa Monica Public Library has grown to encompass more than 400,000 volumes in their 125 years. A central part of the history of Santa Monica, the library contains extensive image archives of Santa Monica from 1875 to the present and newspaper clippings and archives ranging from the late 19th century to present day as well. They also have a Santa Monica collection on documentaries and films about the area, and a collection dedicated to renowned judge Marcus O. Tucker, highlighting the achievements of “Black Men of Courage” like Tucker himself. There is also the Santa Monica History Museum on the premises of the Main Library Building.

Other than the wide range of books and archives, the Library also holds many events and programmes, including author talks, film screenings and concerts. They also gave community reading programmes, followed by book discussions to inculcate a culture of reading. With programmes for adults, seniors, kids and teenagers, Santa Monica Public Library provides entertainment and education for both residents and visitors, and with four buildings across town, there is a lot to do and see!
