Florence’s architectural treasure.
The Church of Santa Maria Novella is an Italian Gothic-style church, located in Florence. Constructed by Dominican brothers Sista and Ristoro, the church was completed with a proto-Renaissance façade by Leon Battista Alberti. When viewing from outside, it is delightful, for it is surrounded by patches of green framed by vibrant flowers that complement the pale shades of the church.
As you enter, you will find that the church looks longer than it actually is. That’s because the central arches have been ingeniously painted to create that illusion. Works of art by masters are on display here, including Masaccio and Giotto. Art lovers, this is your chance to take a closer look at the magnificent works you most likely won’t be able to see elsewhere. Head on to the Strozzi chapel, which is right of the main altar. Admire the intricate frescoes by Filippino Lippi, one of his last works before his death. The altar features incredibly ornate works and the Tornabuoni Chapel features color frescoes and stained glass windows that you won’t be able to stop yourself from photographing. After all, what is a trip to Italy without visiting a prominent church?
