Santa Maria Formosa

Meaning ‘beautiful’ in Latin, the church of Santa Maria Formosa certainly lives up to its name.

The Santa Maria Formosa church in Venice was built in 1492 and designed by the famous Renaissance architect Mauro Codussi. Legend has it that a vision of the Virgin appeared here as a magnificent matron. See the two façades which grace the exterior: the Renaissance-style side facing the canal and the Baroque side facing the nearby campo. Step inside to see more of its wonders. Be enchanted by the St. Barbara polyptych by Palma the Elder, the triptych of Madonna of Misericordia by Bartolomeo Vivarini (1473) and the Madonna with Child and St. Dominic by Giambattista Tiepolo.
