Santa Maria delle Grazie

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and church in Milan, Italy.

The Santa Maria delle Grazie which directly translates to the “Holy Mary of Grace” is a church situated in Milan, Italy. It earned its official UNESCO World Heritage site status and is famous for having a mural of The Last Supper done by Leonardo da Vinci. The church is of Roman Catholic affiliation and was officially completed in 1497. During WWII, much of the church was hit by artillery shelling and hence destroyed, but preservation works — especially on the painting of The Last Supper, started almost immediately to maintain the cultural site for later generations. Other attractions within the church include frescoes which display the Resurrection and Passion by Bernado Zanale. There was once even an altarpiece showing Christ receiving the Crown of Thorns, but the latter was looted by French troops in 1797 and can now be found in the Louvre.
