Sankeien Garden (三渓園)

The perfect blend of Japanese nature and history.

Yokohama’s Sankeien Garden is a place where history and nature fuse seamlessly together. Built by Japanese silk tradesman Tomitaro Hara who also goes by the name Sankei Hara in the early 1900s, this spot is perfect not just for some tranquility but a little knowledge as well. Historical structures are woven harmoniously into the ecology of the gardens. The garden, which covers more than 175,000 square metres, also hosts exhibitions intermittently such as Bonsai exhibitions and the opening of historical buildings to the public. This classical garden itself is popular for its seasonal beauty. During spring, there are cherry blossoms in full bloom. Sometime during summer, one of the ponds will be covered with fragrant Japanese pink lotus blossoms. In winter, there are also the plum blossoms to look out for, signifying the end of winter. Among the numerous historical structures on site, an elegant daimyo residence, several tea houses and a three storied pagoda of Kyoto’s Tomyoji Temple exist. Take a stroll along the ponds and rivers, stop by a tea house or two, snap a picture of beautiful flowers or explore the ancient daimyo home. All of which, can be done at the Sankein Garden.
