Sangumburi Crater (산굼부리)

A Natural Monument which attracts both locals and tourists to visit year-round.

The Sangumburi Crater was designated by the South Korean government as a Natural Monument. It is a crater that spans a whopping 2km in circumference and is situated on the southeastern part of Jejusi. It is a flat crater, about 100 metres deep, 650 metres wide and 2070 metres in total circumference. An aerial view might actually make visitors think that it is a man-made stadium. A wide diversity of flora can be found within the crater such as red-thorn trees, magnolia trees and rare winter strawberries to the north. The south features evergreens, mountain strawberries and evergreens. The wide spectrum of plants and trees in a congested space has been a subject of many scientists’ studies as well. Regardless, this natural wonder is definitely a must see.

Tips Before You Go
Unlike other landmarks in Jeju Island, the Sangumburi Crater is somewhat less popular. This is a good thing however, as you will be able to enjoy the sights without large crowds getting in the way of your enjoyment and photographs. Don’t forget to purchase some local snacks at the entrance and you could even have a picnic here!
